If someone said that NT Source Code can’t be compiled, he’s a bloody bad liar. The proof is
the new enlightening project by Kenneth named NTOSDrop Community Edition. NTOSDrop
Community Edition is a community based NT Operating System kernel for the Windows Server
2003 Service Pack 1 Operating System. The project’s main goal is to help the user get their
peak performance out of their Servers while adding extra functionality while keeping file
size at minimum.

The main features are the NT Kernel Monitor, a small kernel debugger entered when /NTKM is
present in boot.ini or when a Blue Screen of Death Occurs, it looks like this:

Another feature is the seemingly verbose start-up messages, these messages are designed so
that when a start-up failure occurs, you can trace it down to the exact Subsystem that’s
responsible, also on the main start-up screen is the progress bar from Windows 2000. Yes, the
progress bar has returned, complete with no blocks!

Further on, the NTOSDrop Community Edition is not the only project widely exploiting the NT
Source Code. Kenneth has published a recompile of the original Windows NT 4.0 shell for
Windows 2000 and Windows XP (currently not tested on Windows Vista and Windows 7), providing
a possibility for later shell integration for NTOSDrop Community Edition or standalone use on
recent Windows editions.

Surely the amount of possibilities is rapidly growing, and the further development of
NTOSDrop Community Edition (or any other edition for that matter) is imminent. There’s no
doubt that this project will show you what Microsoft could have done with Windows NT and
give a huge homework to MSFT and whatnot. So, believe it, or get blown away for not… believing.
