Well, that would mean you wish to remove existing components...

If this is opensource... this will be linux/unix based right? wouldn't it just be better off using reactos as marxo pointed out? it has far more time and effort put into that project than what we could ever plan to do. It would be an ongoing project that would take years to reach maturity, stability, reliability, security, usability and so on... Very good idea though, i just don't see how it could be implemented well.

Hey forart.eu,

Marxo told me about your project. That it could be a unofficial service pack for XP?
If so, I would like to contribute on this project by programming and implementing the programs you need.
I already have some experience while I was on the Jackhammer Project, and I learned much from it. Your project should be a 100% succes.

As I am studying Computer Science here in the Netherlands,I have projectleading skills, programming and more. I think I can get some more people for implementing and building the final release also.

There are some conditions for me to join this project. One of them is creating a official SF.net project, and preferrably also a freshmeat.net project.

Some ideas to begin with:

*- Registry Tweaks for better memory usage etc.

*- Full online support:
Online content is the future. Google is already making apps for mobiles so users can check there calendar, email, documents, presentations where they want. A good idea is to intergrate this into GNUWin, so users can also share documents on there computers with other people. (Only on invite)

Pm me if your interested.

Greetings,

NL-Stitch

What projects have you done other than jackhammer in the past? your work sounds interesting! :)

I did a lot of web-based projects for school, and did some research projects at home to eventually participate in projects like these.
I'll split some up for you:

Java experience:
I made a java/odbc-database based workshop system for students, so they can sign in for specific classes and workshops.

PHP/MySQL:
I am currently making booking systems for hotels as an intern, and just completed an ebay-like website with live-chat between seller and buyer.

Research:
I have done research for what was possible with creating a service pack for ReactOS, Win95, 98SE, Neptune and soon (hopefully) XP.

Current interests:
I am currently interested to bring the internet and to the desktop. It would be great to have all your files in one place, but to access it anywhere. No more signing up for youtube, blogger.com, flickr or other webapplications. This makes thing messy. The technology is here to make a better app that shares all your content. And if a new type of content is here, to make a new module for it so you can share it with the rest of the world.

NO.

The best idea behind GNUWin is -IMHO- to have a fully functional OS since "v0.0001 pre-alfa". :?

To achieve this you MUST have an -already installed- Windows 98SE, than you lunch the "GNUWin updater" that automatically downloads, remove official component and replace it with an open source alternative. 8)

I really don't think that it's so hard to achieve... <3

NLStitch wrote:If so, I would like to contribute on this project by programming and implementing the programs you need.

Well, the idea in GPLd itself, so you can indipendently start to implement it.

BTW the 1st step is to manufacture a website (and try to ask the control of http://gnuwin.org/ redirect) to collect resources that will be "our" components.

Then build something like JackGet and adapt it for various substitutions...

NLStitch wrote:Some ideas to begin with:

I believe that the 1st goal is to substitute more official components we can, then improve standard features.

BTW, as any open source project, we're in a bazaar so you are free to implement any - functional - thing you want.

This project is kickass! NLStitch sounds very good with the things he mentioned... but what is the research into service packs about? your ebay-like website sounds interesting! :)

Better go ontopic.

I personally think it would be a better idea to deliver an ISO to the end-users, with programs on it.
Then use a updater to update thes programs if needed.

The main problem that delivering an ISO with a mixture of EULA and GPL/open source breaks both licenses, and can be considere piracy too. :x

The "updater" could solve this problem: GNUWin must require an installed Windows 98SE and a functional internet connection to work, IMHO... :)
